The Phoenix Community Concert Band is a passionate ensemble of musicians from Phoenix, NY, dedicated to bringing the joy of music to life. Our mission is to unite individuals through the universal language of music, fostering a sense of community and cultural enrichment. We pride ourselves on our diverse repertoire, ranging from classical symphonies to contemporary hits, ensuring there's something for everyone. David L. Frateschi

David L. Frateschi, a resident of the City of Syracuse NY, recently retired from public school teaching after 35 consecutive years of service with the Phoenix Central School District (NY) where he was the director of bands at all levels (5 – 12).

A high school graduate from North Syracuse Central Schools, Mr. Frateschi went on to receive his bachelor’s degree in music education from Ithaca College and master’s degree in music education from Syracuse University and holds a C.A.S. in Educational Leadership from Syracuse University.

Mr. Frateschi is a member of The Oswego County Music Educators Association, The New York State Band Director’s Association, MENC, NafMe, The New York State School Music Association, Local 78 American Federation of Musicians and Honorary Member of both Tri-M Music Honor Society and National Junior High Honor Society.

Other honors include: the Greater Fulton Chamber of Commerce “Teacher of The Year”, inducted in the “National Honor Roll’s Outstanding American Teachers” for exceptional performance in the motivation and empowerment of today’s youth, and is listed three times in “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers”

He is active as a performer, guest conductor and adjudicator across the state of New York.  Mr. Frateschi is both a NYSSMA Solo and Major Organization Judge.  Mr. Frateschi’s performing ensembles have enjoyed a longstanding tradition of excellence in the CNY region as well as along the North East.  His Bands have won numerous 1st Place and Grand Champion Awards.   His concert band also performed at the NYSBDA Spring Symposium in 2005.  He has conducted bands in New York, Canada, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Massachusetts.

He has performed as a member of the  the “Stan Colella Pops Orchestra”, the “Sunday Night Road Band”, the Latin group “El Zorro Band”, the “American Musical Ambassador’s European Tour”, Rochester’s # 1 Party Band “NIK and The Nice Guys” the “Coachmen”,  the “Critics”, the “Bob Cooper Band”, “The Marching Bluenoters”, the “Mere Mortals”, “Midlife Crisis”, “Primetime Horns”, the “Sharp Dressed Penguins”, and “Brass Inc”.

Mr. Frateschi has been very active as a pit musician with “The Talent Company”, “The Merry- Go- Round Playhouse”, “The Cortland Theatre” and “Cruisin Through The 50’s, 60’s 70’s” held at the New Times Theatre.  

He currently can be seen performing with Syracuse’s Old School Soul/R&B group “The Blacklights”, “Menage A Soul”, “Mas Fina”, the “Salt City Jazz Collective”, the “Stan Colella Orchestra”, “Soul Keyz Band, and the “Silver Arrow Band”.   Mr. Frateschi is also the founder and music director for the Phoenix Community Concert Band (2004 – present), founder and music director the Jazz Kats Big Band and the Jazz Kats Combo (2006-present). The Jazz Katz Big Band was the featured Jazz Artist for the NYSBDA Spring Symposium in 2016.

His students have had tremendous success at All County, All State and Honor Band Festivals.  Several of his students are now Band Directors in local schools, Professors of Music at major Colleges and Universities, on tour with national artists (Nashville in particular) and recording solo artists. Mr. Frateschi brings a wealth of professional and practical knowledge to the students he teaches with a warm and friendly approach.  He is highly energetic and motivational, always inspiring excellence in those he teaches and leads.

Mr. Frateschi has taught privately for over 20 years in Oswego County where he taught children/adults of all ages and levels.  David and his wife Dawn now enjoy spending time with their grandchildren and traveling abroad. 

Ron Haldeman

Ron Haldeman is an accomplished and enthusiastic music educator, conductor, and trumpet performer with thirty five years of dedicated service to the public school music programs of New York State. He currently serves as a substitute Music Educator, Band Director and lesson instructor for several school districts across Central New York..

Mr. Haldeman retired from the Central Square School District in June 2025 following a distinguished 25-year tenure. During his time at Central Square, he served as the K-12 Music Department Director, High School Band Director, lesson instructor, Music In Our Lives teacher and Musical Pit Orchestra Director for numerous musical theater productions. He served as vice President for one year, and as President for two years of the Oswego County Music Educator’s Association.

For 18 years, he directed the acclaimed Redhawk Regiment Marching Band, who along with the instructional staff led the ensemble to three NY State field band championship titles. In recognition of his profound impact on the district, he was inducted into the Central Square School District Fine Arts Hall of Fame in 2025.

Prior to his time in Central Square, Mr. Haldeman spent ten years as the District Music Director, High School Band Director, Music Theory instructor, and Musical Pit Orchestra Director for the Wellsville Central School District, where he and the instructional staff guided their marching band to a state championship. He conducted and performed with the Wellsville Performing Arts Orchestra (WPAO), was nominated for “Teacher of the Year” and was invited to guest conduct a Regional Band Festival in northwestern Pennsylvania.

A native of Manheim, Pennsylvania, Mr. Haldeman earned his BS degree in Music Education from Bob Jones University and MS degree in Music Education from Mansfield University, where he studied trumpet under Dr. Michael Galloway. He began his New York State teaching career in 1990 at the Angelica Central School District.  

Mr. Haldeman has spent his career serving local congregations as a choir and orchestra director, worship leader, keyboardist, and trumpet soloist in churches in Pennsylvania and in New York state. He is a performing member and co-director of the Phoenix, NY Community Band. A career highlight occurred in June 2025, when he performed on trumpet at Carnegie Hall as part of a concert night series with the Mansfield University Concert Wind Ensemble and the Western Illinois University Wind Ensemble.

Mr. Haldeman resides in Constantia, New York, with his wife, Joanie. They have one son, Stephen, who lives in nearby Brewerton with his wife and two children.

Ron Nuzzo

Ron Nuzzo is retired from the Jamesville-DeWitt High School where he was Director of Bands and taught Instrumental Music, Music Theory I, II and Advanced Placement Music Theory.

Mr. Nuzzo holds a Bachelor of Music Education and a Master of Music History and Literature Degree from Syracuse University.
He is currently a member of the National Association for Music Education and the New York State School Music Association. He has been a member of the Onondaga County Music Educators Association where he served as its Treasurer and is a Life Member of Local 78, Syracuse Professional Musicians of Central New York.

Mr. Nuzzo has played trumpet in professional bands and orchestras in the Syracuse area and was a member of the House Band at Three Rivers Inn.  He has also played in orchestras that accompanied Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis, Jr., Bob Hope, Rosemary Clooney, Wayne Newton and many others.

Ron was Co-Conductor and trumpet player in the Lyncourt Community Band for many years. He joined the Phoenix Community Band, played trumpet and was appointed Assistant Conductor and then became its Music Director in 2017.

Formation of the Band

The Phoenix Community Concert Band was founded by Phoenix School District Band DIrector, Dave Frateschi, along with a group of former students & local musicians eager to share their love for concert band music with the community.

First Major Concert

We held our first major concert at the Phoenix High School drawing an audience of over 200 music enthusiasts.

Ron Nuzzo becomes the band's Music Director

Ron Nuzzo steps in to take up the baton from the Band's original director, Dave Frateschi. 

Ron brought almost 50 years of music education & conducting experience to the band for 7 years.

Dave Frateschi returns to the podium as the band's Music Director

Dave returns to the band after retiring from his music teaching position with the Phoenix School District. 

He's thrilled to be back in front of the band that he founded 21 years ago in 2004.
